The Oscar-eligible Animated Features are here!

The Academy has announced the list of this year's Oscar-eligible animated features, which is always a very exciting day for me. This year, there are a whopping 35 movies on the list, which is huge!

This year, I'm doing pretty well, having already seen 31 of the movies. Two more -- Slide and David -- I have screeners for, so I'll have reviews up soon. And I see Zootopia 2 on Tuesday night.

Olivia & las Nubes

There's always at least one movie on the list that I've never heard of, and this year is no exception. The honor goes to All Operators are Currently Unavailable, from experimental filmmaker Dalibor Baric. I quite liked his last feature, Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus, so I'm eager to see this one, too. And I'm wondering how I completely missed it!

As far as films that I thought would be here but aren't: the most shocking omission has to be Ne Zha II, which became the highest-grossing animated film of all time, got great reviews, and received two theatrical releases in the US -- first in February, then with an English dub courtesy of A24 over the summer. I don't know why it wouldn't have been submitted, or deemed eligible, so hopefully someone figures that out. I am shocked.

Other notable titles that aren't here that I thought would/might be: Lesbian Space Princess, Nobody (which just did a theatrical release here in the US), Dandelion's Odyssey (maybe next year?), Death Does Not Exist, Space Cadet, The King of Kings, Hola Frida, Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, Smurfs, and Sneaks. Now, very few of these would've had a shot at a nomination, and a few might end up getting released next year, so we'll see how that all shakes out.

A few I'm pleasantly surprised to see here: Black Butterflies (which is hitting US theaters in a couple weeks), Olivia & las Nubes, and Out of the Nest. Neat!
