A good rule to live by if you love animation: if GKIDS is distributing the movie, it's a must-see. This year, they've already released a slew of great movies (Mars Express and Chicken for Linda! are especially fantastic), and they still have a few more releases on the way. Up next for them is Look Back, which hits theaters in early October and -- from what I've heard -- is something really special. I already have my ticket for opening weekend, and will of course share my thoughts then.
This week, GKIDS finally dated Ghost Cat Anzu, from directors Yรดko Kuno (in her feature directorial debut!) and Nobuhiro Yamashita. It hits US screens on November 15 and looks great. The film was shot live-action and then rotoscoped, using the voice performances from the live-action cast. Very cool. Can´t wait to see it.
The synopsis, from GKIDS' site:
Precocious tween Karin finds herself abandoned by her father in rural Japan. Living in a temple with her grandfather, she meets Anzu, a giant “ghost cat” and notorious layabout tasked with looking after her. Distrustful of her new guardian, Karin sabotages Anzu’s odd jobs for the townsfolk and befriends the eccentric local forest spirits. In an effort to win Karin over, Anzu accidentally makes a deal with the devil, and all Hell breaks loose.
Ghost Cat Anzu is co-directed by renowned artist Yoko Kuno, who makes her feature directorial debut, and Nobuhiro Yamashita, the acclaimed director of Linda Linda Linda. Co-produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions with music by legendary musician Keiichi Suzuki (EarthBound), Ghost Cat Anzu is a wildly funny ride in the countryside.

I wonder if the film might pop up at Animation is Film next month, along with GKIDS' last remaining undated release for this (?) year, The Colors Within. I expect AIF should be announcing their lineup within the next week, so we shall see!
